THE ANATOMY
The lower back, or lumbar spine, is a complex structure made up of vertebrae, intervertebral discs, facet joints, ligaments, nerves, and powerful stabilising muscles.
Its primary role is to support body weight, allow movement, and protect the spinal cord and nerve roots. Because the lumbar spine is involved in almost every daily activity — sitting, lifting, bending, and walking — it is particularly vulnerable to overload, poor biomechanics, muscle imbalance, and injury.
When any of these structures become irritated or dysfunctional, lower back pain can develop.
WHAT CAUSES LOW BACK PAIN?
1. Joint & Disc Dysfunction
This includes facet joint irritation, disc degeneration, disc bulges, or stiffness within the lumbar spine. These issues can cause local pain, reduced mobility, and in some cases referral into the hips or legs.
2. Muscle & Soft Tissue Injury
Muscle strains, ligament sprains, trigger points, and poor load tolerance are extremely common causes of lower back pain. These often develop gradually due to poor posture, prolonged sitting, repetitive movements, or sudden overload.
3. Movement & Biomechanical Imbalances
Weak core stability, reduced hip mobility, poor lifting mechanics, and asymmetrical movement patterns can place excessive stress on the lower back. Over time, this leads to recurrent or persistent pain if not properly addressed.
WHAT MAKES OUR TREATMENT FOR LOW BACK PAIN THE BEST AROUND?
Effective lower back pain treatment rarely relies on one approach alone. Our multidisciplinary model of care ensures all contributing factors are addressed – A classic treatment plan will include the following to maximise your recovery:
Chiropractic care helps restore spinal joint mobility, reduce nerve irritation, and improve biomechanics
Physiotherapy focuses on pain reduction, movement restoration, strength, and rehabilitation
Sports Massage therapy targets muscle tension, trigger points, and soft tissue restriction
Acupuncture may assist with pain modulation, inflammation reduction, and neuromuscular regulation
Clinical Pilates improves core stability, posture, and controlled movement patterns
Back Care Classes educate patients on posture, lifting techniques, and long-term self-management strategies
This integrated approach allows for faster recovery and reduced recurrence of lower back pain.

MYTHBUSTING: LOWER BACK PAIN EDITION
There is a lot of misinformation surrounding back pain. Some common myths include:
“Rest is the best treatment” — prolonged rest often worsens back pain
“Back pain means serious damage” — most lower back pain is mechanical and treatable
“I have a weak back” — backs are strong; pain usually comes from poor movement patterns or load management
“Imaging always explains pain” — scans don’t always correlate with symptoms
Understanding the true nature of lower back pain is a key part of recovery – that’s where our expert, fully qualified, insured and accredited team of Chiropractors & Physiotherapists come in!
